Feeding a baby during the first year of life is one of the most important decisions parents make. From the moment of birth to around six months, nutrition plays a critical role in a child’s growth, brain development, and overall health. Both traditional homemade preparations and commercial infant formulas serve as complementary feeding options once exclusive breastfeeding ends, but understanding their benefits, risks, and regulatory standards is essential for making informed choices.

Why breastfeeding remains the gold standard

Before exploring infant foods, it’s important to understand why breastfeeding is emphasized by health authorities worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, breastmilk is the ideal food for infants-it is safe, clean, and contains antibodies that help protect against many common childhood illnesses. WHO and UNICEF recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, meaning no other foods or liquids are provided, including water.

Breastfed children perform better on intelligence tests, are less likely to be overweight or obese, and are less prone to diabetes later in life. Women who breastfeed also have a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer compared to those who don’t breastfeed. After six months, the WHO recommends introducing nutritionally adequate and safe complementary foods while continuing to breastfeed for up to two years or beyond.

Traditional infant foods in India

India has a rich heritage of preparing homemade weaning foods that have been passed down through generations. These traditional preparations offer affordable, culturally familiar options for complementary feeding after six months of age.

Khichdi: the complete meal

Khichdi is one of the simplest, easiest, and ideal comfort foods for babies of any age. This one-pot meal combines rice and lentils, providing both carbohydrates for energy and protein for growth. Rice provides carbohydrates, lentils provide protein, and vegetables provide vitamins and fiber, making khichdi a perfect recipe for a growing baby.

Moong dal is the most commonly used lentil for babies in North India, while toor dal is most commonly used in South India. Moong dal is considered easier to digest and suitable for young babies. For infants just starting solids, khichdi can be made with only overcooked rice, lentils, and a pinch of salt, without any spices.

Dalia: the fiber-rich option

Dalia, also known as broken wheat or bulgur wheat, is another popular traditional infant food. Dalia is high in fiber content, a rich source of protein, and easy to digest. It has been used as weaning food because it is free of strong taste or smell, making it easier for babies to accept.

Dalia khichdi can be prepared similarly to rice khichdi, combining the grain with moong dal and soft vegetables for added nutrition.

Other traditional preparations

Indian households commonly prepare several other complementary foods for infants. These include porridge made from suji (semolina), ground rice preparations, ragi (finger millet) porridge, and soft idlis. Once babies are nine months old, different types of khichdi like oats khichdi, dalia khichdi, tomato khichdi, and palak khichdi can be introduced into their diet.

The key principles for preparing traditional infant foods include cooking grains thoroughly until soft, avoiding added salt and sugar during the first year, and introducing new foods one at a time to monitor for allergies.

Commercial infant formulas

When breastfeeding isn’t possible or sufficient, commercial infant formulas provide an alternative source of nutrition. These products are manufactured to meet specific nutritional standards and come in various forms.

Types of infant formula

Commercial formulas are available as powdered formulas that require mixing with water, concentrated liquids that need dilution, and ready-to-feed liquids that can be used directly. Liquid infant formula is made to be sterile and should not make babies sick when prepared following container instructions. Powdered formulas, while more economical, require careful preparation to ensure safety.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) categorizes infant nutrition products into several types, including infant milk formula for babies from birth, follow-up formula for older infants, and foods based on traditional ingredients designed for infants between six and twenty-four months.

Nutritional fortification

Commercial infant formulas are fortified with essential nutrients to support infant development. Products may contain vitamins and minerals, which should not exceed the Recommended Dietary Allowances specified by the Indian Council of Medical Research. Key additions include iron for blood formation, DHA for brain development, calcium for bone growth, and various vitamins.

Regulatory standards in India

India maintains strict regulations for infant food products to ensure safety and quality. The regulation of infant food in India is governed by FSSAI, which operates under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Key regulatory requirements

The Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Regulations, 2020 became fully operational in October 2022. Infant food should meet stringent microbiological standards to ensure products are free from harmful bacteria and pathogens. This includes testing for coliforms, E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria.

The presence of heavy metals, contaminants, or toxic substances in infant food is strictly regulated under the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins, and Residues) Regulations, 2011.

Labeling requirements

FSSAI mandates specific labeling requirements for infant foods. Labels must state that “mother’s milk is best for your baby” in capital letters and warn that infant milk substitutes should only be used on the advice of a health worker. Labels must also include ingredient lists, nutritional components, manufacturer details, expiry dates, and the FSSAI license number.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification is mandatory for manufacturing and selling infant food in India, providing an additional layer of quality assurance.

Safety concerns with infant foods

Both traditional and commercial infant foods carry potential risks that parents should understand.

Contamination risks in powdered formula

Cronobacter bacteria represent a serious concern for powdered infant formula. Cronobacter can live in dry foods such as powdered infant formula and has also been found on contaminated feeding items like breast pump equipment. Getting sick from Cronobacter doesn’t happen often, but infections in infants can be deadly, particularly in babies less than two months old.

Powdered formula is not sterile and might contain germs. Over 90% of Cronobacter infections have been linked epidemiologically to powdered infant formula. To reduce risk, the WHO recommends reconstituting powdered formula with hot water above 70ยฐC to reduce bacterial concentration.

Safe preparation practices

You should wash hands with soap and water before preparing bottles or feeding your baby. Use prepared formula within 24 hours, or throw it out, and don’t keep prepared formula at room temperature as bacteria multiply at temperatures above 4ยฐC. All feeding equipment should be properly cleaned and sterilized.

Concerns with homemade foods

Traditional infant foods also require careful preparation. Rice and lentils must be washed thoroughly, cooked until completely soft, and stored properly. Ingredients should be fresh, and preparation surfaces must be clean. Introducing new foods one at a time helps identify potential allergies.

Cost considerations

Commercial infant formulas can be expensive, placing financial strain on families. Traditional homemade foods like khichdi and dalia offer significant cost savings while providing good nutrition. Ingredients for traditional preparations are readily available and affordable across India.

However, working parents may find commercial formulas more convenient despite the higher cost. Families should weigh convenience against cost and nutritional preferences when making feeding decisions.

Making informed choices

The ideal approach to infant feeding combines breastfeeding with appropriate complementary foods introduced at six months. For most healthy infants, traditional foods like khichdi and dalia provide excellent nutrition at low cost. Commercial formulas serve as valuable alternatives when needed, provided they’re prepared safely and meet regulatory standards.

Parents should consult pediatricians before introducing any new foods and watch for signs of allergies or digestive issues. Whether using traditional or commercial options, maintaining hygiene during food preparation is essential for infant safety.
