What is food adulteration?
Food adulteration occurs when someone intentionally alters food quality by adding, removing, or substituting substances to increase profit or deceive consumers. This practice reduces the nutritional value of food and often introduces harmful substances. Adulteration can take many forms, including mixing inferior ingredients, substituting valuable components, hiding poor quality through packaging, or adding toxic chemicals.
Food adulteration primarily happens for economic gain. When manufacturers add cheaper vegetable oil to expensive olive oil but sell it as pure, they’re committing fraud. Similarly, mixing water into milk or adding artificial colors to spices may increase profits, but these practices compromise food safety and quality.
Types of food adulteration
Food adulteration falls into three main categories, each with distinct characteristics and risks.
Intentional adulteration
Intentional adulteration involves deliberately adding inferior or harmful substances to food products. Common examples include mixing chalk powder into flour, adding water to milk to increase volume, or using artificial dyes in spices to enhance their appearance.
