Thailand’s seafood sector: A success story

Thailand’s seafood industry demonstrates how ISO 22000 can transform export potential. Thai seafood processors made considerable efforts over the past decade to ensure their production and manufacturing standards meet international expectations in food safety and traceability. By widely implementing ISO 22000, the sector addressed international concerns about food safety and quality control.

The results speak for themselves. Thailand’s major export markets include Japan, the United States, Australia, China, and Saudi Arabia, with canned tuna and shrimp accounting for 70 percent of the country’s seafood market share. The comprehensive food safety management systems aligned with ISO 22000 requirements gave Thai exporters the credibility needed to expand into these demanding markets.

Beyond regulatory compliance, ISO 22000 certification communicates a powerful message about a company’s professionalism and commitment to food safety. As global food supply chains become more complex and as consumer expectations for transparency and safety continue rising, the role of internationally recognized standards will only grow.

For food businesses with international ambitions, ISO 22000 certification represents more than just a quality credential. It’s a strategic investment in market access, a demonstration of commitment to food safety excellence, and increasingly, a basic requirement for participation in global food trade.
