The BRC/IOP partnership and global standards

The hazard and risk management system, based on internationally recognized HACCP principles, creates the program’s core framework.
Technical management systems set requirements for managing product quality and hygiene practices, building on ISO 9000 principles. These include specifications, supplier monitoring, traceability, and incident management. Site standards define expectations for production environments, covering building layout, equipment maintenance, cleaning, pest control, and waste management. Product and process control requirements address design, development, process controls, inspection, and testing, with specific sections on managing foreign body and chemical controls. Finally, personnel requirements cover staff training, protective clothing, and hygiene expectations.
Risk categorization in packaging
The BRC IOP Standard outlines three categories of risk, with requirements itemized differently depending on the category. High hygiene risk includes packaging that comes into direct contact with food products or other hygiene-sensitive items, where no absolute barrier exists. Low hygiene risk covers packaging for consumer products and secondary or tertiary packaging for all uses.
